History of The Loft - Page 2

The first issue of this page is about the most important club in the club history, The Loft in NYC.

The Loft Classics

Loft Classics referrs to "the songs David Mancuso spinned at the Loft". To better understand the Loft, the following are some musical notes. Generally, the music at the Loft was "Jazzy, soulful dance music". All genres were represented by mostly minor labels. David just spun "good music", eventually people began to call them "Loft Classics". Though a series of vinyls named "Loft Classics" are released, they are not authorized by David to be labeled as such- even worse, the sound quality is bad. They are far from perfect, and these releases have been a source of trouble. Now we can buy a compilation album edited by David himself, released on nuphonic (which CDs are shown left side of this page). This remastered album boasts almost "original" sound quality, perhaps better than the original.

Personal Thoughts

Personally I think these two albums are essential, in understanding "the Loft Sound". We can describe these songs, whose common point is just "good sound", as the Loft Sound. Bootleg version don't reflect David's intensions of sound. In this sense, I strongly recommend these compilation albums. Here are just some explanations regarding the songs:

Manu Dibango/Soul Makossa
A famous song "discovered by David". They say David was whooped with joy when he found this song at a small shop run by a Jamaican. At that time nobody except David had this record, and this song became a club-hit instantly. Also, this song has another story.- Kool & The Gang wrote "Jungle Boogie", which was inspired by Dibango`s song.

Loose Joints/Is It All Over My Face
A famous song and "underground classic" in the 70s and 80s. The Loft became this
song's premier venue. In fact, the people who attended Loft parties, took vocal part in it. Without the Loft, this song wouldn't have had the acclaim that it did.
